Origin and Historical Significance

The name "Bukchon" translates to "northern village," referring to its location in the northern part of Seoul. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was an upscale residential area primarily inhabited by aristocrats, scholars, and government officials. Due to its historical prominence, some also referred to it as the "Yangban Village" or "Yangban Neighborhood." However, during the Japanese colonial period, some hanok houses were destroyed or altered, with non-traditional buildings introduced. In 1992, the restrictions on hanok construction were lifted, leading to a blend of traditional and modern structures. In 2001, the "Bukchon Village Renewal Project" was initiated by the city of Seoul, resulting in the village receiving UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Excellence Award in 2009

Features and Architecture

The majority of hanok houses in Bukchon have distinctive gabled roofs and exhibit a 'ㄷ' or 'ㅁ' floor plan. This urban hanok structure contrasts with traditional ones that feature an open courtyard. The village's architectural style evolved over time, with newer constructions departing from the classic design.
